My Favourite Shops in Dunedin: Shopping Haul!

I have to admit, this post is way overdue… as I am now back home in Scotland. However, it was a pretty hectic trip as with my brother being the main focus for being there, my blogging took a temporary back seat… but I’m back! I wanted to share with you my top places to hit for shopping in Dunedin. It is safe to say that Dunedin is nothing like Glasgow when it comes to shops (no Primark, H&M, River Island, Forever 21, New Look…) but the beauty of shopping abroad is that you pick up pieces that you can’t get at home.

So, for sole purpose of my blog (kind of) I hit the shops and picked out my favourite finds in Dunedin…

This is the NZ equivalent of New Look/ River Island and is the best place for high-street fashion.

Factorie is another high street shop, similar to New Look or Forever 21, with more casual high street pieces.

Every time I visit Dunedin I make sure I visit Lovisa, a jewellery shop with designer style pieces, without the price tag. Again, a great place for gifts. They have something for everyone and they wrap up your goodies beautifully!

Lovisa don’t have an online store unfortunately! Some of their products can be viewed here.

The Warehouse

Now, the Warehouse gets a pretty bad name from what I’ve heard. It is more like Primark budget but it has everything from clothes to garden furniture. I was in and spotted this super cheap gorgeous nude quilted bag , and even better it was on sale!

The Smart Girl’s Guide to… Parka Jackets!

It is a staple jacket everyone, male or female, should have in their wardrobe; a parka. Now that autumn has arrived I went shopping to search for the perfect parka.

After trailing through the shops with my poor granny and aunt who had to put up with my whinging, “I don’t like the zips/shade of green/ pockets/ hood/ fur”… I finally found The One.

It all happened by accident, I had given up and wanted a nosy in Matalan at their home ware and left with a jacket! So now I am a Parka expert (kind of) I have selected parkas for all occasions, so you don’t have to put your granny/aunt/friend/ dog through the trouble I did. And if you’re feeling super generous (I wasn’t), there is even an option for the lucky man in your life. Happy shopping!Parka Matalan blog pic final

At just 25, Millie Mackintosh is one busy lady. Model, reality TV star, fashion designer… and to top it off, the socialite has now launched her own jewellery range with Dorothy Perkins.

Millie launched her fashion range last month, which was so in demand, the website crashed. Her jewellery range is now set to sell out, after launching on Wednesday.Millie PIC 3

Inspired by family heirlooms and pieces Millie collected while travelling, she was spotted saying she enjoyed designing her range so much it didn’t feel like work.

Featuring statements, charm and collar necklaces, as well as bracelets and drop earrings. The 23-piece collection is – as they would say in Chelsea – simply fabulous.

Luckily for us, you don’t need a Chelsea budget to buy Millie’s trinkets. Prices start at £10. Click links for link to website.

Say ‘I Do’ to Oxfam Bridal Boutique

Your wedding day is supposed to be the best day of your life, you wear a gorgeous dress, eat delicious food and most important of all, get married to the person you love. However, nowadays more and more people are not only left with wonderful memories of their big day, but they are also left with debt. And a lot of it. With the average wedding in the UK costing around £25,000 and the average price for a bridal gown sitting at £1,340 you can see why more and more people are wanting to get married on a budget.

This is where Liz Sim, Manager of the Oxfam Bridal Boutique in Clarkston can help. As the only Oxfam store that specialises in Bridal in Scotland, the boutique has a range of bridal dresses at an average of £150. The shop opened after Liz used the empty shop for a pop up store for Oxfam, then the landlord allowed her to use it after her Oxfam was given bridal gowns and there wasn’t the space for them.

“Last year we got a donation from a bridal shop, which was really nice,” explains Liz.

“I just had to have them out on display in my shop, which was difficult because when a bride comes in to try on, the dresses are really big and then with the underskirts, you need a lot of space, and you also need privacy.

“We sold really well from there, and then there was a bridal shop that had suddenly closed down. This is how it really snowballed because I knew that I had all these beautiful dresses downstairs.

“I had a mum and daughter come in and got the story of her not getting her dress, the tears and I told them I have some beautiful dresses.”

Liz revealed how the girl finally found a dress she loved, that was completely different from her original dress. She walked away with a dress, underskirt and veil for £150.

Situated on the bustling Busby Road, the boutique is in a prime spot, with gorgeous big bay windows, however, unfortunately the shop which she has been allowed to use temporarily by the landlord, has been sold.

Liz explains: “The unit has been sold, which is great for Clarkston because Semi-Chem is opening up but it also means i’m going to be homeless. And me being me, I will not be homeless! I cannot let it go because we offer such a good service, people come to the shop from all over scotland.”

“If we could find another unit in Clarkston we would be delighted to go into it, it is really good for the community, we bring a lot of people from all over. This means the coffee shops, nearby eating places and local businesses benefit.”

The boutique has dresses that will suit all shapes and any age range. “I’ve seen all shapes and sizes.” says Liz.

“I had a lady in her early fifties who was getting married, who didn’t want the big meringue, she wanted something quite classy. So we spent a lot of time finding something for her. There was no pressure, I locked the door, so it was just her and I.”

If anyone has anything they could donate, or if you would like to volunteer call Liz on 0141 638 8944.
