The Smart Girl’s Guide to… Making your home cosy for Autumn!

Darker evenings, falling leaves, colder nights…now that summer has decided to leave us for another year, we have now had to come to terms with the fact that it’s autumn. One thing that softens the blow for me is shopping. After I have stocked up on a new winter coat, scarves and boots, it is then time to shop for the home. It doesn’t have to be expensive, as a few key pieces really make a difference. Snuggle up under a throw, light some candles, grab a hot chocolate and aaaah… Don’t you just love autumn?

Here are a few top tips on how to make your home feel warm and cosy for autumn…

  • Swap your bright summery cushions for some cosy faux fur ones. You can pick up some great ones on the high street and all reasonably priced too. Drape a cosy throw over the corner of the sofa for easy reach when your chilly watching the telly.

  • Nothing says “autumn’s here!” like spicy, scented candles. Look for candles with a winter berries, cinnamon, clove or spiced apple scent to provide instant comfort. Yankee Candles are great, or try Asda or Primark for great priced candles.

  • Invest in a cosy lamp for when the nights start to become darker earlier. Use a lower watt light bulb to give the room a warm glow. Fairy lights are also a great, low cost way to give a bit of light without being too glaring. Try white or red for a cosy feel, without being too ‘Christmassy’.  Wrap them up and sit in a clear glass vase or hang over your mantelpiece or shelves.
