Cocktails & Fairytales goes to… The Scottish Wedding Show 2015

Being a blogger can have many perks, reviewing the latest products, attending launches and… having an excuse to go to The Scottish Wedding Show. As someone who isn’t engaged, it can look a little (okay, a lot) crazy going to a wedding fair. However, in the name of research and thinking of my lovely followers, I got in touch and I was invited along. So, with my bride-to-be bestie Louise, we attended the Sunday show.

The event took place at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) which is easy accessible by train, and is only around 3 minutes away from Glasgow Central Station.

Walking in, there were stands everywhere so we had a wander around, collecting leaflets and brochures along the way. There were a few people asking us who the bride was and as soon as they found out it wasn’t me, I was completely ignored. However, the majority of the exhibitors were lovely and spoke to the both of us equally. wedding show 3

Unfortunately, no photographs were allowed during the catwalk show. The show included Bridal and bridesmaid gowns from; Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo Bridal Boutique, Angelique Lamont, Berketex Bride and Joyce Young for By Storm. The catwalk also featured Groomswear from Clan Kilts and Slater Menswear.

We arrived just after 11am and left around 2pm, which gave us plenty of time to see everything.  We stopped off mid-way for some light refreshements! The Cocktail Bar was sponsored by Manorview Hotels & Leisure Group and The Best Scottish Weddings magazine. The bar staff were charming and showing off fancy tricks. With a stocked bar offering cocktails, wine, beer and soft drinks, we opted for Prosecco and sat at the lit up tables.

With hundreds of exhibitors to look round, from cars to cakes and magicians to gowns, there was plenty to keep us entertained. There were so many to choose from, but here were my highlights of the day…

Fake Bake

Wandering around the stall, it was hard to miss the bright pink stand, set out like a living room, I was attracted immediately. The set was my ultimate dream home!

I chatted to Nicki, who told me all about the new Fake Bake Beauty at Home Parties, where you can gather the girls round and a Fake Bake party host will come to your home. Perfect for hen parties, this allows you to shop in the comfort of your living room and ask the experts all your beauty queries. The range includes Skin D-Luxe Skincare, Scream & Pout Make-Up, Dolce Dreams for Bath & Body and of course the Fake Bake tan products.  For more info go to:

Walking towards the stand, I fell in love with this stunning gown. The sweetheart neckline and crystal detail makes this gown fit for a princess!

Smile Bright

Something that every bride craves on her wedding day is a diamond-white smile. Smile bright is a new non-peroxide treatment you can do in the comfort of your own home. The gel claims to remove the stains from your teeth rather than bleach over them.

We were offered a free sample, and after having it on for only a few minutes, I actually noticed a slight difference in my teeth. The kit sounds like really good value for money and I was really impressed so I would be interested in trying it again.

The Original Beauty Glowwedding show 2

When were stopped and asked if we wanted to try this new bronzer, we jumped at the chance. The Original Beauty Glow is a bronzing powder with built in moisturiser that gives an instant tan. The tan is waterproof and doesn’t go patchy. It claims to suit all skin tones, which is why there is only the one shade.

We both had the bronzer applied to our faces, and also on one hand to show the difference against the other hand, which resulted in a deep, even tan. As someone with naturally fair skin, I was pleasantly surprised as it gave me a nice glow. I would definitely be interested in reviewing this product, so stay tuned!

Supernova Wedding Design & Flowers

This was another stand that caught my eye, with different table set out to display centerpieces, flowers, back drops and lighting. With styles to suit everyone, this stand was gorgeous!

My personal favourite was this pretty table with beautiful fresh flowers, pillar candles and vintage gold accessories. For more info go to:

Overall, The Scottish Wedding Show was a fab day out and such a good laugh. My top tips would be; make sure you get there early, go with the girls instead of your hubby-to-be as I spotted a lot of bored looking men and leave the car and take the train… trust me, the cocktail bar is hard to resist!

Were you at the show this weekend I would love to hear what you thought, comment below! Xx

Say ‘I Do’ to Oxfam Bridal Boutique

Your wedding day is supposed to be the best day of your life, you wear a gorgeous dress, eat delicious food and most important of all, get married to the person you love. However, nowadays more and more people are not only left with wonderful memories of their big day, but they are also left with debt. And a lot of it. With the average wedding in the UK costing around £25,000 and the average price for a bridal gown sitting at £1,340 you can see why more and more people are wanting to get married on a budget.

This is where Liz Sim, Manager of the Oxfam Bridal Boutique in Clarkston can help. As the only Oxfam store that specialises in Bridal in Scotland, the boutique has a range of bridal dresses at an average of £150. The shop opened after Liz used the empty shop for a pop up store for Oxfam, then the landlord allowed her to use it after her Oxfam was given bridal gowns and there wasn’t the space for them.

“Last year we got a donation from a bridal shop, which was really nice,” explains Liz.

“I just had to have them out on display in my shop, which was difficult because when a bride comes in to try on, the dresses are really big and then with the underskirts, you need a lot of space, and you also need privacy.

“We sold really well from there, and then there was a bridal shop that had suddenly closed down. This is how it really snowballed because I knew that I had all these beautiful dresses downstairs.

“I had a mum and daughter come in and got the story of her not getting her dress, the tears and I told them I have some beautiful dresses.”

Liz revealed how the girl finally found a dress she loved, that was completely different from her original dress. She walked away with a dress, underskirt and veil for £150.

Situated on the bustling Busby Road, the boutique is in a prime spot, with gorgeous big bay windows, however, unfortunately the shop which she has been allowed to use temporarily by the landlord, has been sold.

Liz explains: “The unit has been sold, which is great for Clarkston because Semi-Chem is opening up but it also means i’m going to be homeless. And me being me, I will not be homeless! I cannot let it go because we offer such a good service, people come to the shop from all over scotland.”

“If we could find another unit in Clarkston we would be delighted to go into it, it is really good for the community, we bring a lot of people from all over. This means the coffee shops, nearby eating places and local businesses benefit.”

The boutique has dresses that will suit all shapes and any age range. “I’ve seen all shapes and sizes.” says Liz.

“I had a lady in her early fifties who was getting married, who didn’t want the big meringue, she wanted something quite classy. So we spent a lot of time finding something for her. There was no pressure, I locked the door, so it was just her and I.”

If anyone has anything they could donate, or if you would like to volunteer call Liz on 0141 638 8944.
